Celebs and drug addictions are like bread and peanut butter. They go together but at one point they will either cut the bad habit and transfer to yoga or… they’ll eventually make a band about pizza. There is also the infamous 27 club that has taken too much lives already. Money, publicity and too many temptations usually lead to drug addictions. Heroin and cocaine abuse are still pretty common in Hollywood and many stars have successfully overcome them. Not only these celebs are stronger now, they are also an inspiration to many people who still struggle with drug addictions.

1…Slash. Guitarist Guns n’ Roses
Slash is of course one of the biggest icons in the rock and roll world. He also used to be one of the most famous drug users in the music business. But Slash didn’t give up. Due to his congestive heart failure diagnosis in 2001, Slash received the much needed motivation to fight this dangerous habit. His wife also encouraged him and thanks to his will and support, the former Guns n’ Roses guitarist won the battle.
Eric Clapton struggled with serious heroin addiction. In one of his performances, Clapton passed out and he had to be revived. Later on, Pete Townshend, “The Who” guitarist managed to convince Clapton to fight this addiction. Fortunately, Eric listened to his friend and he successfully kicked the habit. He had also established the Crossroads center for drug and alcohol treatment so all other drug addicts could do the same thing.
You probably know Brian Welch as one of the co-founders of the very popular metal band Korn. But did you know he once struggled with drugs? At the moment when Korn was extremely popular, Brian got addicted to several substances including sleeping pills, Xanax and alcohol. In 2005 he became a Christian and decided to cleanse himself spiritually and literally. Since then, he has been clean.
Well this was a surprise. It’s hard to imagine Oprah doing anything wrong, but she actually admitted once that she used crack cocaine in the 80′s. She admitted doing this because she thought it would help other people with the same drug addiction to overcome it. We don’t know for sure for how long Oprah has used crack or when exactly she decided it’s time to stop, but it sure is inspirational. It was the 80′s people!
Eminem is another star who has admitted being addicted to various drugs for some time. According to him, this addiction was ruining his life until Elton John, a friend he met in 2001, finally convinced him to fight this habit. Eminem was addicted to prescription drugs like Vicodin, Ambien and Valium. After Elton John helped him realize how bad the situation was, he overcame the addiction and he is clean since then.
6…Steven Tyler of band Aerosmith
Steven Tyler is one of the celebs who had started using drugs before he was famous. His addiction has roots in his high school era, and it turned into something much more serious in Aerosmith period of publicity and free models. He admitted that his addiction got worse because of the class struggles, difficulties to cope with amazing success and poor relationships. In 1986, his band mates convinced him to go to rehab and he won the battle with drugs!

Robert Downey Jr. is known as someone who had a massive drug addiction when he was still a young actor. He was so addicted that it influenced his acting career. That is why he was often passed over for roles. After some time, Robert was convinced to go to rehab. Luckily for him and his career, he managed to kick the habit. Unfortunately, his drug addiction ruined his love life as well, so Sarah Jessica Parker broke up with him. You win some, you lose some.
Samuel Jackson had a serious drug addiction. He even got overdosed on heroin several times. On those occasions, he was sent to New York rehab more than once, but as it usually happens, he would always end up escaping. His cocaine role in Jungle Fever was cathartic to him, because it made him realize how serious this addiction, or any other drug addiction, really is. Consequently, Samuel was inspired to quit.
Ah, the all-time addiction and scandal winner- Charlie Sheen. Widely remembered for his role in Two and a Half Men, Charlie also used to be a drug user. It took such a significant part of his life that he was fired from filming the sitcom. However, he sought help and went to rehab. According to some sources he has been clean since then. We are still not sure about his other addictions such as women and of course- winning.
Angelina Jolie has always had that punk rock spirit in her. Remember when she was dating Billy Bob Thornton and they kept bottles with their blood in them? Sid and Nancy much? Anyway, Angie admitted doing almost every drug possible. However, we don’t have the information if she was actually addicted to something, she just liked to experiment. When she got engaged to Brad Pitt she decided to put an end on that part of her life.
Keith Richards is another music icon who had some serious problems with drug addiction. But unlike the most of ex-addicts, Keith says he has absolutely no regrets about being a substance addict before. In fact, he says that being addicted to drugs helped him write some of the greatest hits he had written. However, Keith is a smart guy and knew it was time to stop playing with hard drugs and his life. Now he only smokes pot.
Ozzy Osborne and his band mates were at the peak of their career in Black Sabbath when they dealt with substance abuse almost regularly. Ozzy got so addicted at one point, he got fired by his band. This led to Ozzy taking even more drugs and he had much bigger problem than ever. Under influence of his wife, Ozzy got clean and stopped drinking and doing drugs. He is now clean and more lovable than ever.
Britney was your favorite celeb wreck, admit it. Even when she was going through a real hell (remember 2007 when she shaved her head and almost dropped her baby), you kind of loved her because she was so sincere in being a wreck. She had struggles with alcohol and drugs and that was widely publicized. Everything she did was analyzed in media the day after. However, after she gave birth to her second child and went to rehab, she stayed clean.
Demi Lovato, just like Britney Spears, had battled publicity stress since she was very young. Unable to cope with it, she struggled with several sorts of addictions. Demi had a problem with alcohol and she had self-harm issues. Because of these problems, she had to go to rehab for a while. Luckily, Demi is living a healthy life today and she has been clean since she left the rehab.
Chaka Khan started to have addiction problems after she signed with Warner Bros. Actually, she started using cocaine and heron and shortly after she experienced problems that this addiction caused. She was addicted to both substances for nearly a decade when famous singer Etta James warned her about her problem and consequences she will experience if she continues to use them. Chaka Khan listened to Etta and decided to quit. And she really did!
In 2010, Kid Cudi got arrested for drug possession. According to him, in that time he was a heavy marijuana user and that had a serious impact on his songs. However, he didn’t stop there. In 2011, he decided it was time for change so he cleaned himself up. He also decided to make a tattoo on his wrist that symbolizes the death of his drug addiction. Since then, Kid Cudi is 100 % sober and his tattoo is still there.
Unfortunately, the saying “like father like daughter” was very true in this case. When she was only 17, Kelly Osbourne became an addict. She was addicted to Vicodin so much that at one point she took as many as 50 pills a day. It was a huge threat to her physical and mental health and something had to be done. She went to rehab and in 2009 she could finally say for herself that she was clean.

We first met Nicole as a Paris Hilton bestie aka that crazy chick with Paris in that crazy show. However, Nicole was addicted to heroin, pills and marijuana shortly after. In 2003, she even got arrested for illegal possession of heroin. In 2007, she got arrested for driving under the influence of Vicodin and marijuana. Nicole has been clean for years now, she completely changed her lifestyle, got married and today she has two kids!
Drew Barrymore is an excellent actress and we love her when she plays those good girls from the next door. However, she has had a huge problem with alcohol and drug addiction. It had all started very early, when she was only 11. At that age she was already a heavy smoker and was addicted to alcohol. Luckily, she managed to clean herself up completely and today she loves her healthy life and being sober.
Micha Barton, just like Marissa whom she played in The O.C., faced problems with growing up very young. It seems like she was in the press more often because of her DUI’s than because of her roles. She drove under influence many times and she was arrested for illegal marijuana possession a few times. There were also rumors about cocaine abuse when she drastically lost weight in 2009, but today she is clean and healthy, and she plans to remain sober.
